Land resource conservation in Malawi is administered by the Land Husbandry Branch at the Ministry of Agriculture, through the eight Agricultural Development Divisions. In this study of the impact of soil conservation efforts, two approaches were used. In Lilongwe, the physical soil conservation structures were constructed by the government on farmers' fields while in Ntcheu farmers were left to adopt conservation technology with the help of extension workers. In both cases the competence and adequacy of conservation extension machinery was also assessed. The reults of the study were collected through questionnaires to farmers. In Lilongwe participation by the farmers in the initial stages of the project was low and twenty percent wanted the government to do maintenance work on the structures. In Ntcheu 91 percent of the farmers embarked on conservation technology on their own initiative. The report recommends customization of messages to suit prevailing smallholder levels of technology and their perception of soil erosion processes.
