The fruit of Quisqualis indica L. or niyog-niyogan is a popular remedy used by traditional healers in the Philippines in treating human intestinal parasites. Clinical tests in the University of the Philippines College of Medicine by Maramba et al (1978) confirmed its use to expel worms particularly Ascaris. Niyog-niyogan fruits are available only during summer but are sold throughout the year in dried form in herbal stalls in downtown Manila. Whether these dried fruits which have been stored for some time are still effective as an anthelmintic has not yet been studied.
