Only groundwater is used for water supply of the population and a part of the industry in Vojvodina (Yugoslavia). Groundwater is collected from different water-bearing Quaternary and Pliocene media of various depths and diverse degrees of hydraulic link between ground and surface waters. Aquifers tapped for water supply are also recharged by different ways. Therefore, the duration of water exchange in the process of groundwater collection ranges from several days to several thousand years. It is clear that under such conditions the quality of groundwater varies not only between aquifers, but within the same aquifer at different locations in Vojvodina. In addition, groundwater quality of the main aquifer tapped over the greater part of Vojvodina for public water supply in certain regions does not meet the standards for portable water and necessitates a complex upgrade procedure. On the basis of available data, the quality of groundwater is presented with reference to the content of macro components. An indication is made of the possible deterioration of groundwater quality in the tapping process, as well the natural protection of certain aquifers from contamination from the land surface.
