Cane (Rattan) : A literature review.
1987
Safo, K.
A review of literature was done on canes (rattans) with a view to compiling a sort of state of knowledge report for local researchers who are about to begin serious research work on rattan. The review reveals that rattan has long played an important role in the lives of the rural people in Africa and Southeast Asia where it is found. Later it gained foreign recognition and demand for it increased rapidly. Unfortuantely however, little attention was given to the rattan industry by researchers and policy makers even though cultivation of certain species like Calamus caesius and Calamus arachycoleus had been shown to be possible while at the sametime demand was growing. The existence of the industry was thus gradually becoming threatened. Today, the situation has changed. Forest resources managers, scientists, governments and organization both local, and international are showing keen interest in the rattan industry. Immediate problems facing the industry are the control of exploitation, harvesting and processing, and cane preservation. Priority is therefore being given to these aspects of the industry.
